Sabo Deadlift Shoes
- Type Deadlift shoe
- Department Men's
- First Available 2016
A flat, hard sole and real grip keep your pull planted from the first rep.
Sabo's deadlift shoe does the one thing that matters most here: it puts your foot almost directly on the platform. The sole is flat from heel to toe and hard enough that it doesn't compress when you set up, so our pulling height stayed the same whether we were in shoes or socks. Grip held on a rubber platform and on chalky wood, and there's no heel to shift your start position. Of the pairs on this page, it's the closest to barefoot with a sole underneath.
The fit is deliberately close — snug through the midfoot, higher and firmer around the ankle than a trainer, closer to a climbing shoe. That's what stops your foot sliding when you spread the floor. The trade is a collar that can press on a prominent ankle bone; lace the top a little looser for the first few sessions and it settles down.
What we keep coming back to is how little the shoe interferes: nothing squashes underfoot, nothing rolls, and the feel at rep one is the feel at rep twenty. It sits in the middle of this group on price, which is easier to justify for a shoe you'll wear for one lift than a premium pair would be. Between this and the LARA STAR, we take the Sabo when the deadlift is the point of the session and the LARA STAR when it's one part of it.
Bottom Line
The flattest, hardest sole here and the closest you'll get to pulling in socks with rubber underneath — this is the pair we recommend for anyone whose training revolves around the deadlift.
