McDavid
McDavid Lace-Up Ankle Brace
- Care Hand wash
- Size Medium
- Closure Lace-up with figure-8 strap
- Stabilizers Rigid side stays
Rigid side stays for volleyball and basketball, with a low profile that clears a sneaker.
Two rigid stays on the sides of the ankle are what separate the McDavid from the other lace-ups here, and we think that is the right trade for anyone playing a cutting sport. Lace it, pull the figure-8 strap across, and the sides of the joint stop opening the way they do when you come down on someone's foot. You get that protection without a padded shell filling up your shoe.
The rest is deliberately plain: breathable panels, a low profile that slides into most sneakers and court shoes, and no bulky collar to fight. In a hot gym that counts for something. So does the lacing, which lets you take up the fit as swelling drops over a couple of weeks, something the pull-on sleeves in this group cannot offer.
What you pay for that lockdown is the fitting. There is no quick release and no stretch in the shell, so getting it over an ankle that is still swollen takes attempts and a certain amount of patience, and a couple of the wraps here go on in seconds where this one does not. It is also hand wash only, which we minded more than we expected across a twice-a-week season.
Bottom Line
Our pick for volleyball and basketball players who want rigid side support and will trade a slow, two-handed fitting for it.
