NORTHYARD
NORTHYARD Running Shorts
- Liner Linerless
- Fabric Lightweight quick-dry
- Pockets Three zippered pockets
- Inseam Options 5, 7, or 9 inches
Three inseam choices and secure zip pockets make these the easiest default for most men.
Three zippered pockets and a choice of 5-, 7-, or 9-inch inseams are the reasons the NORTHYARD pair takes the top spot. We like having that much control over coverage without giving up secure carry: phone in one pocket, keys in another, a gel in the third. The fabric is light enough to disappear on a warm run, and it dries fast enough that a sweaty session does not leave the shorts heavy.
The 7-inch version is the most forgiving place to start. It lands just above the knee on an average frame, while the 5-inch is a proper short cut and the 9-inch gives more thigh coverage. The cut stays close without clamping through the hip, and the drawcord lets you dial the waist. We did not fight the fabric on tempo efforts or in the gym.
There is no liner, which makes these more flexible than a one-piece running short. You need a snug synthetic brief or your usual running underwear, but in return the NORTHYARD can go from a run to the gym to travel without feeling like a piece of kit with only one job. The three zip pockets are the detail we kept coming back to; they are deep enough for a phone and placed so they do not swing.
A 7-inch pair is the safest first buy; if you are taller or want more coverage, go 9. Runners who want a built-in liner should look at the maamgic instead. For everyone else, this is the pair that makes the least fuss across the most runs.
Bottom Line
For most men who want one pair that handles daily runs, the NORTHYARD is our default: choose your inseam, then rely on three zip pockets and quick-dry fabric.
