ASICS
ASICS Novablast 5
- Toe Box Wider than prior version
- Cushioning High
- Arch Support Good
- Listed Weight 1.44 lb
Soft, stable, and light enough for daily long runs.
The Novablast 5 is the shoe we recommend first for the bulk of long-distance training. The heel strike is unusually soft, and the foam feels lively rather than dead, so easy miles do not turn into a slog. It is not a racing flat, and we do not treat it as one; this is a daily trainer that happens to handle a lot of distance.
What separates it from the max-cushion crowd here is the balance. The shoe feels light for the amount of foam underfoot, and the ride stays stable enough for tired legs without the firm, corrective feel of a stability shoe. Runners with wider feet may like the roomier toe box than earlier versions, but check the fit if you are between sizes.
This is a daily trainer, not a race-day shoe. If your goal is a fast half or marathon, the Novablast gives you comfort and protection, but it will not feel as snappy as a lighter racing model. For most long runs, that is the right trade.
Bottom Line
Our default for long road miles: soft enough for easy days, stable enough to trust, and lighter than the max-cushion picks here.
